Photo Disc Direct Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What kind of media does Photo Disc Direct use?
A: PDD currently uses professional duplicator grade CDs and DVDs manufactured by Verbatim.  The CDs are rated for 52x and the DVDs are rated for 8x.  16x DVDs are available by request, however we recommend testing your drive(s) for compatibility first.  We can supply you with a sample for testing.  Both 8X and 16X DVDs are of the “–R “ variety.

Q: What is the ArcSoft software option all about?
A:
PDD has partnered with ArcSoft to offer our disc customers a branded, customized software solution at a very affordable cost.  When you choose this option, your PDD Customer Service Representative will work with you to gather all the images and information to create your “Gold Master.”  Once that is complete and you have approved it, we will pre-burn the software onto your discs before we print them.  When you receive them, all you need to do is burn your customer’s images onto the disc.

When they place the disc into their Windows PC, the software will automatically run and present them with editing and presentation options for their images, all in an environment that promotes your brand.

Q: What is the data/image capacity difference between CD and DVD?
A:
PDD CDs will hold 700 megabytes of data or about 500 5 mega-pixel JPEGs with average compression.
DVDs will hold 4.7 Gigabytes of data or about 3,300 5 mega-pixel JPEGs with average compression.

Q: I’ve seen CDs and DVDs printed lots of ways with different image areas.  How does PDD print their discs?
A:
For all order quantities under 2,000, PDD uses a UV Cure, Direct-to-disc digital printer.  We print from an inner circle that starts 38mm from the very center of the disc out to an outer circle approximately 2mm from the edge of the disc.  For order quantities greater than 2,000, PDD will print your discs on a screen press using the same boundaries listed above.  Click Here to download a PDF with more detailed description of the PDD image area.

Q: What kind of art files do you require?
A:
All images for orders under 2,000 pieces should be a flattened TIFF or “Highest Quality” JPEG in CMYK format. The image should be 120mm square with a minimum resolution of 360 dots per inch (DPI).  For runs over 2,000 pieces we will contact you to discuss your art.

Q: How fast will my order ship?  What about reprints?
A:
Typically, new orders will ship 3-5 business days after you approve your PDF proof.  Exact reprints will ship 2-4 business days after you place your order.

Q: What are the shipping and handling charges?
A:
PDD ships via UPS.  When you place your order the system will give you a specific shipping cost based on your address.  PDD never charges a handling charge.

Q: What about sales tax?
A:
PDD is located in New York and as such we are required to collect NY sales tax for all orders that ship to an address in NY, NJ and all other states with which NY has a sales tax reciprocity agreement.  If you are in New York and have a resale certificate, you may fax it to 585-641-0008 and we will not charge you sales tax.

Q: What if I have trouble burning on PDD media?
A:
PDD is a brand of Spinergy.  Spinergy has more than a quarter century of experience in the disc business.  Call us any time at 800-333-1428 and we’d be happy to help you with any technical issues.
